The Cuyahoga River fire of 1969 helped galvanize the clean water and environmental movements, even though it was not the worst fire the polluted river had seen. Historian David Stradling spoke from along the river in Cleveland, Ohio, and talked about the fire, the myths associated with it, the urban poverty and environmental crises of 50-years ago, and the campaign by Mayor Carl Stokes to find solutions. Mr. Stradling is co-author, with his brother Richard, of Where the River Burned: Carl Stokes and the Struggle to Save Cleveland. close
