A House Judiciary subcommittee held a hearing examining women in the criminal justice system. Among the witnesses were Piper Kerman, author of Orange is the New Black, and Cynthia Shank, a former prisoner featured in the HBO documentary, The Sentence. Members questioned the panel on conditions in jails for female prisoners, highlighting examples that included pregnant prisoners held in solitary confinement, emotional distress from family separation, abuse of power from male guards, and lack of resources when re-entering society. close
