House Republican leaders held a news conference following a closed-door meeting with rank-and-file members. Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said “no” when asked if President Trump’s tweets about four freshman Democratic House members were racist: “I believe this is about ideology. This is about socialism versus freedom.” He said he would vote “no” later in the day on a House resolution commending the president’s tweets and would urge his colleagues to also vote “no.” He also defended former House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) from attacks by President Trump. He touted the former speaker’s accomplishments working with the president: “These are two individuals that worked very well together.” close
