The Senate Aging Committee held a hearing to explore ways to combat robocall fraud. A Pennsylvania sheriff, U.S. postal inspector, and telecommunications consultant provided testimony on some of the causes and effects of robocall scams and how to better educate the public and stop the calls at the source. The committee also heard emotional testimony from Angela Stancik, the granddaughter of a senior citizen who died by suicide after falling victim to a scam. Telecommunication consultant David Frankel highlighted that there are only a handful of companies that offer VoIP services that allow call “spoofing,” which falsifies the information transmitted to a caller ID system. He said these companies could do more to crack down on suspicious activities like mass quantities of calls originating outside the U.S. using spoofing technology. close
