Walter Cronkite anchored CBS News live coverage of the return and recovery of the Apollo 11 astronauts from the first manned mission to the moon. The broadcast included President Nixon’s greeting and interviews of the three astronauts - Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins - aboard the USS Hornet, the ship that retrieved the Columbia command module from a remote area of the Pacific Ocean. Following the president’s departure from the ship on Marine One, Mr. Cronkite spoke in the studio with astronaut Wally Schirra and science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke about the historic, scientific and cultural significance of the Apollo 11 mission. Also interviewed was Janet Armstrong, Mr. Amstrong’s wife, who thanked the public for its support. close
