Norfolk State University professor Cassandra Newby-Alexander discussed the history of the arrival of the first Africans in Virginia in 1619.

In August 1619, colonist John Rolfe recorded that “20 and odd” Africans arrived at Virginia’s Point Comfort, captives on an English privateer ship who were exchanged for food. This marked the arrival of the first Africans in British North America, and this month marks the 400th anniversary of that event. close
