The British House of Commons debated and passed a bill, with a 327-299 vote, which blocks the United Kingdom from leaving the European Union without a deal and requires the Prime Minister to seek a delay from European Union officials if a deal is not struck. Prime Minister Boris Johnson and many of his fellow Conservative Party members argued the legislation would unfairly tie the Prime Minister’s hands in trying to negotiate with E.U. officials in Brussels. Other lawmakers criticized Prime Minister Johnson’s decision to boot 21 members of his party after they voted in favor of a motion that allowed the bill to be brought up for consideration against the Prime Minister’s wishes. Following the vote, the bill moved on to the House of Lords for further consideration. close
