Outgoing Economic History Association president Price Fishback presented an illustrated talk titled “Social Insurance and Public Assistance in the 20th Century.” Professor Fishback traced the history of spending on social insurance programs from their early 20th century beginnings at the local and state level, to 1930s New Deal federal programs, to more recent trends in policy, spending, and outcomes. This event was the presidential address for the Economic History Association’s annual meeting. close
