Children Left Behind
C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2019 LCV Cities Tour” in Rapid City, South Dakota, from September 7-13, 2019, to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Midco cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. The history segments air on American History TV (AHTV) on C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments air on Book TV on C-SPAN2.

Oglala Lakota journalist and author Tim Giago wrote his first book, Children Left Behind: The Dark Legacy of Indian Mission Boarding Schools, at the age of 17. Mr. Giago talked about his experience at the Holy Rosary Mission school and of those Native American families who felt their Lakota identity and culture were repressed. The book served as the beginning of a long career as a Native American journalist.
