USS Thresher was a nuclear-powered submarine which broke up underwater on April 10, 1963 approximately 220 miles east of Boston. All 129 people on board died: 16 officers, 96 enlisted men, and 17 civilian technicians. This ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery was to dedicate the USS Thresher Commemorative Memorial. Speakers include former Chief of Naval Operations John Richardson; Thomas Wiley, brother of USS Thresher crew-member John Wiley; and Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH). close
