Matthew Costello talked about his new book, The Property of the Nation: George Washington’s Tomb, Mount Vernon, and the Memory of the First President. He discussed the ways that Americans remembered and celebrated George Washington in the 19th century and how the freed and enslaved people on Washington’s Mount Vernon estate helped shape the historical narrative about the first president.
