A House Education and Labor subcommittee held a hearing to examine the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, a bill requiring employers to make accommodations for pregnant workers. Among the witnesses testifying were legislation lead sponsor Representative Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) along with Michelle Durham, a former emergency medical technician (EMT) worker in Alabama. Ms. Durham testified about how she was not allowed to take another position at her job and had to take an unpaid leave of absence when she was pregnant. The hearing also addressed the 1978 Pregnancy Discrimination Act and state laws that provide pregnancy accommodations. close
