World War I scholar and author James Carl Nelson discussed his book, The Polar Bear Expedition: The Heroes of America’s Forgotten Invasion of Russia, 1918 to 1919. In August of 1918, about 5,000 soldiers of the 339th regiment of the U.S. Army sailed to a Russian city 1,000 miles northeast of Moscow. They would spend the next year in the frozen north fighting the Red Army in an attempt to aid anti-communist forces. This program was a part of the 2019 National World War I Museum and Memorial symposium. close
