According to the Pentagon, Secretary Spencer was asked to resign by Defense Secretary Mark Esper amid Mr. Spencer’s attempts to make a secret deal with the White House regarding Navy SEAL Eddie Gallagher. Gallagher had been demoted for posing in a picture with a dead ISIS fighter’s body, but President Trump reversed the demotion. In his resignation letter, Secretary Spencer wrote, “I cannot in good conscience obey an order that I believe violates the sacred oath I took in the presence of my family, my flag and my faith to support and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
