The Supreme Court heard the consolidated oral arguments in June Medical Services v. Russo and Russo v.June Medical Services. The cases concern a 2014 Louisiana law passed requiring doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the facility where they perform abortions. Physicians who violate the law would face penalties including prison time, fines, losing their license to practice, and civil liabilities. Prior to the law taking effect, two Louisiana doctors who perform abortions filed suit arguing the law violates their due process rights and also their patients right to an abortion.

On June 29, 2020, the Court in a 5-4 decision struck down the Louisiana law. close
