Historian Michael Shaffer looked at the life of Thomas Wallace Colley, who served in the Confederate 1st Virginia Cavalry during the Civil War. Using Colley’s voluminous journal entries and letters, Mr. Shaffer discussed the trooper’s experiences at key battles such as Bull Run and Antietam, as well as his severe wounding in 1863 and the amputation of his left foot a year later. Mr. Shaffer also examined Colley’s post-war life and writings detailing his struggle with what we now call post-traumatic stress disorder. The Powhatan Civil War Roundtable hosted this event. close
