The House in a 232-183 vote passed a resolution to remove the deadline for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Congress approved the ERA in 1972. Thirty-five states ratified it by 1978 (38 were needed), one year before the deadline. Five states, however, later rescinded their ratification. Congress extended the deadline to 1982. Nothing changed before that deadline. Since then, three more states approved ratification, including Virginia which became the 38th state in January of 2020. close
