General Kenneth McKenzie, who commands U.S. Central Command and is responsible for Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Middle East, testified on President Trump’s 2021 Defense budget request before the Senate Armed Services Committee. He answered a range of questions on the plan to withdraw troops from Afghanistan, the recent U.S.-Taliban peace agreement, and how the coronavirus outbreak is impacting the region. Later, he responded to questions on the miscommunication over the damage assessment in the retaliatory attack by Iran against U.S. troops in January. General McKenzie told the senators he took full responsibility for the initial assessment and there was no pressure by the Trump administration to give the report. Several senators also acknowledged the deaths of two American soldiers one day before in a rocket attack in Iraq. close
