This special “Washington Journal” primetime edition on the coronavirus pandemic focused on its impact on education. First, Eric Morath, Wall Street Journal labor economics and policy reporter, discussed the Labor Department’s latest report showing 701,000 jobs were lost in March, nearly half of them from the hospitality and tourism industry. Then, Ted Mitchel, president of the American Council on Education, talked about the COVID-19's impact on U.S. colleges and universities and the professors and students who have had to move their teaching and learning online. He also responded to viewer comments. Finally, Randi Weingarten, American Federation of Teachers president, talked about the impact of the outbreak on the nation’s public schools, and she answered calls from teachers, administrators, and students. close
