The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee held a hearing on efforts to improve and expand coronavirus testing. Dr. Francis Collins, the director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Gary Disbrow, the acting director of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), testified on the work of their agencies to improve existing testing capabilities and develop new testing regimes with the goal of making millions of “easy-to-use” tests available by the end of the summer. “I must tell you, senators, that this is a stretch goal that goes well beyond what most experts think will be possible,” said Dr. Collins, adding that he remained optimistic it could be done. The witnesses also talked about antibody testing, vaccine development, and partnerships with the private sector to quickly scale up production of promising treatments. close
