Chad Williams is the author of Torchbearers of Democracy: African American Soldiers in the World War I Era. He talked about the post-war activism of these soldiers, explaining how after fighting for the idea of “democracy” abroad, many returned to join movements aimed at securing more rights and better social standing for African Americans here at home. The National World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City, Missouri taped this event in November 2019. close
