In cooperation with Westinghouse Broadcasting, the U.S. Commissioner of Education presents a report on the status of schools in 1957. That same year, the Soviets launched the first artificial satellite, Sputnik, which brought increased attention to improving science education. In 1957, prior to the 1979 creation of the Department of Education, the commissioner headed an office within the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. The report argues that teachers deserve higher pay, school construction needs to increase, parents must show more interest in education, and children should be encouraged to stay in school longer. close
