Axios hosted a virtual conversation on policing and racial inequality with Representative Bobby Rush (D-IL); St. Paul, Minnesota, Mayor Melvin Carter (D); NAACP President Derrick Johnson; and Rochester, New York, Mayor Lovely Warren (D). The leaders discussed the way forward in the wake of the death of George Floyd, a Black man killed while in custody of Minneapolis police; the ongoing protests across the nation; and the measures needed to reform police departments. Mayor Carter criticized President Trump’s earlier comments on the economy and Mr. Floyd’s death, saying the country had a long way to go spiritually and added “that paper economy that the president is celebrating today would unfortunately, most likely not be helping George Floyd today.” close
