Labor Secretary Eugene Scaliahe testified at a Senate Finance Committee hearing about the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on unemployment insurance benefits. Secretary Scalia told members he feels the CARES Act was an essential piece of bipartisan legislation to help those hit hard during the pandemic, and that he was in favor of extending unemployment benefits, although not the additional $600 per week payments set to expire at the end of July 2020. Citing the recent job numbers as a positive sign of job growth, he said that though there would still be a need for unemployment benefits, the main goal was to get people back to work in order to grow the economy. Also testifying before the committee were labor professionals, a small business owner, and a state senator from Florida. close
