North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper (D) held a briefing to discuss the state’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. Governor Cooper said that he would not be moving forward with efforts to further reopen the state due to a record high number of COVID-19 cases. The governor attributed the high number of cases to an increase in testing around the state, but Dr. Mandy Cohen, Secretary of North Carolina’s Health and Human Services (NCHHS), expressed concern about the trend in cases saying, “I think this is our first wave.” Despite the increase, Governor Cooper did say he expected students to return to school in the fall. Also discussed were the potential for President Trump to hold rallies in North Carolina after the announcement he’d relocate the Republican National Convention (RNC) to Florida, and Governor Cooper’s thoughts about Confederate statues on the state’s capitol grounds. close
