Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) held a briefing to address the increase of coronavirus cases in the state. Governor Abbott announced Texas reported 2,622 new cases of COVID-19, its highest number to date. The governor explained the reason for the jump in cases was due to the batch release of results in several counties and a surge in testing at congregate facilities such as assisted living homes and prisons. The governor also spoke about an increase in cases of people under the age of 30, which he attributed to those who may be visiting bars and not practicing social distancing. Dr. John Zerwas, Health Affairs Executive Vice Chancellor with the University of Texas, addressed the availability of hospital beds saying Texas had increased its capacity 70% since mid-March. close
