In a vote of 236-181, the House passed the Democratic police reform bill, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick (PA), Will Hurd (TX) and Fred Upton (MI) were the only Republicans to vote “yes.” No amendments were allowed. The bill was written in response to Mr. Floyd’s death while in custody of Minneapolis police in May 2020. The measure seeks to change police department practices across the nation, ending racial profiling and the use of excessive force. It would also make police officers more accountable for the use of deadly force. The Senate was working on its own bill to address the issue. close
