The House Natural Resources Committee held a hearing on the incident between U.S. Park Police and protesters near the White House at Lafayette Square on June 1, 2020. Law enforcement officials advanced on protesters who had gathered in the park to protest the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis. Shortly after police cleared protesters, President Trump walked from the White House to St. John’s Episcopal Church to hold a Bible and pose for pictures with members of his administration. During the hearing a protester and a reporter, who were in the park at the time, claimed the protests had been peaceful and that they heard no warning before police began to advance on protesters. Jonathan Turley, a George Washington University law professor, stated it was unclear if plans to clear the park were connected to President Trump’s visit to St. John’s Church. Mr. Turley called for further investigation to better understand the actions of law enforcement and protesters close
