The House Oversight and Reform Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties held a virtual briefing on violence against protesters and journalists in the wake of the death of George Floyd, a Black man who died in custody of Minneapolis police. Speakers included protesters and journalists who were shot by police during peaceful demonstrations, including LaToya Ratlieff, great-niece of civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer, who described being shot in the face with rubber bullets by police. Committee Chair Jamie Raskin (D-MD) also commented on the actions of the National Guard against protesters convening near the White House on June 1. In his opening remarks, he said President Trump’s actions at St. John’s Church that evening amid the violence against protesters, was the “most grotesque photo op in the history of the United States.” close
