The House Foreign Affairs Committee held a hearing on the implications of China’s new national security law in Hong Kong. Witnesses included activists and scholars, who discussed the new laws and how the international community can put pressure on China. Other questions focused on China’s human rights abuses, the future of U.S. relations, and the role of the United Nations. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) delivered a statement at the beginning of the hearing in a rare appearance before the committee. “The purpose of this law is to frighten, intimidate and suppress the people of Hong Kong, who are peacefully demanding the freedoms they have long been owed.” Speaker Pelosi told the committee. close
