The House Natural Resources Subcommittee on National Parks held a hearing to discuss three pieces of legislation calling for the removal of Confederate statues on public land. Witnesses included the bills' authors; historians; former Mayor of New Orleans Mitch Landrieu (D), who removed Confederate monuments from that city in 2017; and Reverend Robert W. Lee IV, a descendant of General Robert E. Lee who said allowing Confederate statues to remain would be an “endorsement of complicity.” Topics discussed included the history of erecting Confederate monuments, the reasons for the removal, and the difference between statues located on battlefields and in public spaces. close
