House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) spoke briefly with the press after meeting with White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin to negotiate another round of COVID-19 relief. Speaker Pelosi called the meeting “consequential” and said, “We have always said that the Republicans and the president do not understand the gravity of the situation.” She went on to criticize the Republican plan, saying, “... what they were offering us was Sophie’s Choice. Not enough money for food. Nothing for housing in terms of rentals .... Not enough money in the pockets of the American people.” She later called the Republican deal “anorexic.” close
