Due to social distancing guidelines put in place in response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 DNC was a virtual event, with no audience, prerecorded and live video presentations, and none of the leading participants speaking from the host city of Milwaukee. The roll call vote consisted of people from 57 states and territories appearing over video. Speakers included Jill Biden, former Presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, former Secretary of State John Kerry, former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates, and 2018 Georgia Democratic gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams. Cindy McCain, wife of the late Senator John McCain (R-AZ), appeared in a video on her husband’s friendship with Mr. Biden. Colin Powell, secretary of state during the George W. Bush administration, also voiced his support for the nominee. Actress and musician Tracee Ellis Ross served as the host.
