In late-April 1865, with the Civil War drawing to a close, the barge Black Diamond sank following a nighttime collision on the lower Potomac River with a steamer loaded with Union troops. The accident resulted in the deaths of 87 men. Karen Stone, manager of the St. Mary’s County, Maryland Museums Division, detailed the events of that night and why this naval disaster is often overshadowed by other events at the time, such as the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and the hunt for his killer John Wilkes Booth. The National Museum of Civil War Medicine hosted this conversation and provided the video. close
