Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards (D) held a briefing in Baton Rouge on the state’s response to Hurricane Laura. He assessed storm damage, saying the state “did not sustain and suffer the absolute catastrophic damage” that had originally been forecast. He told reporters that Hurricane Laura was the most powerful storm to ever make landfall in Louisiana, with sustained winds of 150 mph. In addition, the governor confirmed four fatalities caused by trees falling on residences. Later in the briefing, Governor Edwards provided an update on daily COVID-19 cases and deaths. close
