Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) held a press briefing on the state’s response to Hurricane Laura after touring damage caused by the storm. Speaking outside the regional airport in Ruston, Louisiana, the governor said that Hurricane Laura is the strongest hurricane ever recorded in Louisiana to make landfall, and that when comparing to Hurricane Katrina, it was the failure of the levees that caused all the loss of life resulting from that storm. Gov. Edwards also talked about the challenges they are facing with the intersection of a hurricane and the COVID-19 pandemic, reminding people to still adhere to mitigation guidelines. close
