The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee held a hearing on the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on passenger and freight rail. Amtrak President and CEO William Flynn testified that passenger usage plummeted 97 percent in March of 2020, dropping to 4,000 passengers per day. According to Mr. Flynn, the significant drop in passenger usage had continued and had caused the service to reduce daily service to three times a week service in some regions. He explained the impact this had had on Amtrak’s funding, and requested additional congressional funding to supplement shortages. Representatives from the freight rail industry and those who rely on freight rail testified as part of a second panel related to non-passenger traffic on America’s rails and discussed challenges presented by the coronavirus pandemic and ways to continue to improve service. close
