Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller announced the U.S. would reduce the number of troops in Afghanistan and Iraq to 2,500 in each country by January 15, 2021. The acting secretary, who replaced former Defense Secretary Mark Esper the week prior after he was fired by President Trump, said he had spoken to U.S. allies, NATO leaders, and members of Congress about the decision. He thanked the troops who had served in the protracted wars and said the U.S. military would retain the capabilities to intervene in the region if necessary.
