In an excerpt from the session of the U.S. House of Representatives, members debated H.R. 2010, the National and Community Service Trust Act, which would establish a corporation for national service initiatives. The act would grant the corporation the ability to reward participants in the national service programs with funding credits applicable towards higher education. Supporters stated the bill would open educational opportunities for the economically disadvantaged while providing an important labor force for the country, while opponents stated the program only established another expensive entitlement program. close
