President Clinton spoke in a Rose Garden ceremony to announce his selection of U.S. Supreme Allied Commander in Europe General John Shalikashvili to chair the Joint Chiefs of Staff. General Shalikashvili replaces General Colin Powell, who will retire on September 30. President Clinton spoke on the new security threats facing the U.S. following the end of the Cold War and praised the abilities of both General Shalikashvili and General Powell. General Shalikashvili spoke briefly after the President’s remarks to acknowledge the honor and praise the abilities of the U.S. military. The President and the General responded to questions from reporters following their prepared remarks. close
