A large crowd of supporters cheered enthusiastically throughout a brief ceremony on the tarmac at Stapleton Airport marking the arrival of Pope John Paul II to the United States. This marked his third visit to the U.S. to attend activities surrounding World Youth Day, being held in Denver, Colorado. After deplaning and greeting the Clinton family and administration officials, the Holy Father joined President Clinton on a stage to speak on the need for a moral vision for the youth in industrialized countries. After speaking, Pope John Paul and the president shook hands with members of the crowd, who stood in a pouring rain to hear their speeches. The Holy Father then boarded an awaiting U.S. helicopter and departed the airport. Pope John Paul II was expected to stay in the United States for four days. close
