NASA spokespersons and scientists spoke in a news conference to discuss the current status of the mission of the Mars Observer spacecraft, a project designed to orbit and observe the surface of the planet Mars. Two days earlier, NASA scientists lost contact with the spacecraft. If contact is not reattained within a few days, the entire mission could be lost. Mr. Cunningham discussed hypotheses concerning the problems on the spacecraft, which may or may not allow the satellite to go into orbit by itself without transmissions from Earth. close
