Mr. Lowery spoke to a meeting of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference from a pulpit in the First Korean Baptist Church in Washington. In his remarks on the state of the civil rights movement, Mr. Lowery noted the strides taken in terms of civil rights in the previous 30 years since the “I Have a Dream” speech of Martin Luther King, and also noted the problems of racism and violence still hindering the dream of civil rights for all. His speech was punctuated with shouts of approval from the audience. close
