Mr. Chavis, the new head of the NAACP, talked about growing up in the segregated south and his involvement in civil rights struggles. He related how he joined the NAACP when he was twelve years old and how he went to the whites only library as a protest. He was jailed in the Wilmington, NC protest, but was released when the decision was subsequently overturned. Mr. Chavis was selected as NAACP executive director earlier this year. close
