President Clinton and Vice President Gore spoke on the South Lawn surrounded by forklift trucks carrying government documents to introduce the National Performance Review, a program for government reform created by Vice President Gore and a task force. The president praised the report of the task force, which detailed over 800 initiatives to make government more responsive, more efficient, and less costly. Following the speeches, the president and vice president examined some of the government regulations and documents on one of the forklifts before greeting people in the crowd. The event was attended by a large audience, which included members of the Clinton presidential cabinet, Attorney General Reno, the vice president’s wife Tipper Gore, and the vice president’s father, former Senator Albert Gore Sr. close
