The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation presented coverage of Canadian party leaders' reactions to the recent announcement to hold national elections on October 25, 1993. The Prime Minister addressed reporters with the election announcement and presented her party’s platform. She answered questions on the national deficit and her plans for alleviating unemployment. Mr. Gauthier of the Liberal Party presented his party’s platform and answered questions on changes that would take place under Liberal rule. Ms. McLaughlin presented her party’s position and stressed that they were against the North American Free Trade Agreement. Mr. Manning spoke on the need for government to re- spond to people’s needs. Mr. Bouchard spoke on the need for Quebec to become an independent state. Mr. Hurtig spoke briefly on his party’s position in the election. Mr. Mansbridge and Mr. Newman commented on the Conservative and Liberal Parties, mentioned the number of new parties taking part in the election, and said that there was a strong showing from all party leaders with no blatant gaffes. close
