A group of scholars discussed how the Civil War press depicted soldier experiences, exploring how information was transmitted and the scope of reporting. They talked about soldiers writing to editors of their hometown newspapers, the role of abolitionist papers, the lack of material on Mexican-American combatants and how the wartime press portrayed women. This session was part an annual symposium on the 19th century press and the Civil War hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The school provided this video. close
