Several members also asked if sanctions were tough enough and the best way forward in putting pressure on the Assad regime. This was Representative Eliot Engel’s (D-NY) final hearing as chair of the committee. Incoming chair, Representative Gregory Meeks (D-NY), who was one of several members who gave a tribute to the chair, said in his remarks he promised to continue in the same tradition of the committee.
