The emergency hearing was held following the detection of a mutated strand of COVID-19 in parts of the U.K. at the beginning of December. Peter Horby, chair of the advisory group, told members that the new variant had “some kind of biological advantage” that made it spread faster, and warned that scientists still do not have a full picture of the situation.
