Much of the briefing focused on a new variant of COVID-19 that first appeared in the United Kingdom but had been recently confirmed in a Colorado resident. State health officials said they were also investigating a second possible instance of the new variant, which is believed to be more transmissible, but not necessarily more severe. Additionally, Governor Polis talked about the state’s vaccination efforts, which he said had led to Colorado having one of the highest per capita vaccination rates in the country. He urged Coloradans to celebrate New Year’s Eve in a safe manner and avoid seeing people outside of their immediate households.
